Having seen Petra in films such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Mummy Returns, & Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, some people are not aware Petra is a real location. Petra exist, in real life and is a place you can visit and experience for yourself.

To access the hidden city of Petra you must traverse a winding path on camelback through a narrow gorge known as the Siq (the shaft). With tall canyon walls on either side of you the Siq narrows to less than 10 feet wide at some places. Making this trek it is easy to understand how Petra remained lost for centuries. At the end of the path the narrow slit opens to reveal the ancient Treasury, the masterpiece of the ancient city, carved directly into the red mountain rock.

Petra marks the achievement of the impressive Nabataean civilization, who carved the city into the mountains. It was considered an important strategic location along the ancient trade routes between ancient Eastern cultures and those in what is now called Europe. The Nabataean Empire grew rich through trade in frankincense, myrrh, and spices.

Petra was later annexed by the Roman Empire and continued to thrive until a large earthquake destroyed much of the city. The earthquake combined with trade routes which favored sea over land travel, eventually led to the downfall of the city. Petra ultimately became largely deserted and it was then lost to all except local Bedouin from the area.

In 1812 a Swiss explorer named Johannes Burckhardt set out to ‘rediscover’ Petra. It is reported he dressed in Arab garb and convinced his Bedouin guide to take him to the lost city, After this, Petra became increasingly known in the West as a fascinating and beautiful ancient city, and it began attracting explorers and world travelers.

Petra was announced as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in 2007 and has become a popular tourist destination for adventure seekers, and those interested in antiquity. Petra has also been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the 28 places you should see before you die.
