Apollo 8 - Dark Side of the Moon Space Exploration Fine-Art Print
Have you ever looked up at the night sky and pondered what is on the other side of the moon? That same sense of wonder married to scientific curiosity spurred NASA to launch the Apollo 8 mission on December 21, 1968.
The Apollo 8 launch was before my time but my father would tell me about watching the Apollo 8 mission on television when he was a teenager. He shared with me how the entire nation was mesmerized when Apollo 8 became the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth, orbit the Moon, and return. The big thrill was when the astronauts traveled around to witness the dark side of the moon. There was a glint of a tear in my father's eye when he recalled watching the Christmas Eve television broadcast of the Apollo 8 crew sending a message of hope and peace back to Earth from space. This was a groundbreaking mission which clearly had a lasting effect on a generation of Americans and set the stage for NASA to eventually land a man on the moon.
The Apollo 8 mission was full of many firsts. These astronauts were the first humans to escape the Earth's gravity and the first to watch an Earthrise from space. It was simply unbelievable at the time. Apollo 8 was also the first human spaceflight launched aboard the mighty Saturn V rocket and carried the first astronauts launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Florida.
The mission was a success. The Apollo 8 astronauts returned to Earth on December 27, 1968, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. The Apollo 8 crew members were named Time magazine's Men of the Year for 1968 upon their return.
