You'll be transported beyond the Earth to the moon every time you admire this beautiful artwork in your home!
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." — Neil Armstrong
Apollo 11 blasted off in July 1969, sending astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins on a journey to the moon and back. These brave NASA astronauts became the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface. Over 650 million people watched the historic landing on July 20, 1969, and heard Neil Armstrong now famous quote “... one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The Apollo 11 spacecraft launched atop a Saturn V rocket. The first two stages of the Saturn V blasted the astronauts into orbit. The third stage was used to throttle the Apollo Command Module and Lunar Module to the moon. Once the spacecraft achieved lunar orbit, the two modules separated with two astronauts landing on the lunar surface while the third astronaut continued orbiting the moon in the Command Module.
When the two astronauts were finished working on the surface, they boarded the Lunar Module and launched back into lunar orbit to dock with the Command Module. Once safely aboard the Command Module they crashed the no longer needed Lunar Module into the moon and and blasted back to Earth. The Command Module landed in the ocean, where the astronauts were picked up.
The legacy of the Apollo 11 mission is still felt today having a profound impact on science, culture, and global affairs. The 50th anniversary is a good time to reflect on all that has been gained from exploring the moon and to wonder about what new discoveries NASA astronauts will make upon their return to the moon in 2024.
